Environmental management of petroleum operations

Petroleum operations and the environment
Upstream petroleum operations affect the natural environment and communities. It can happen as pollution from normal operations, from disasters, as land use and by development projects. The global climate is affected by carbon dioxide and methane released to the atmosphere.
Competent firms in the sector accept that adverse impacts of their operations must be managed, minimized and mitigated. Industry practices have evolved internationally. Responsible environmental management of the sector involves firms, host nation authorities, and civil society.
Training on environmental management
We provide training on the environmental management of petroleum operations, with an emphasis on important measures in the early stages of the resource extraction cycle: Strategic environmental assessments, environmental and social impact assessments, and baseline studies. We address the roles of national authorities and oil companies, as well as the involvement of civil society. Our training draws on our experience as authors of strategic environmental assessments and guidelines for impact assessment for several countries.
We have developed an e-learning course on environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA). The e-learning can be used either as a stand-alone source of training or, preferably, in conjunction with training delivered in person. You can try out a sample of the e-learning course here: ESIA e-lecture sample .

Dr Heike Pflästerer is our lead partner on environmental management. Inquiries can be directed to her or to Dr Erik Jarlsby.
